Agistri: The Rising Star of the Saronic Gulf
A Conversation with George Xydas

Mr. Xydas, how did your love for Agistri begin?
While talking with an Italian woman on Skala Beach in Agistri, she told me, “Agistri has nothing to envy Capri.”
I replied that Capri had already become a well-known tourist destination by the mid-19th century, whereas Agistri remained relatively unknown until the 1960s.
Then she said something I have never forgotten:
“Believe me, the only thing missing from this island is a Ferrari… and it’s better that way.”
That conversation perhaps captures the charm of Agistri better than anything else.
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is George Xydas. I was born in Kallithea, attended the Evangelical School of Smyrna, and studied Architecture at La Sapienza University in Rome.
About a year ago, after losing my wife, the close friendship and support of Mr. Georgios Emmanouilidis and his family convinced me to visit Agistri. It was here that I slowly began to find my footing again.
What was it that won you over about the island?
Its natural beauty, simplicity, and the kindness of its people.
Skala, Megalochori, Skliri, Aponisos, and so many other beautiful corners of the island captivated me. The pine-covered hill stands proudly above Agistri, overlooking the sunrises, sunsets, crystal-clear waters, and peaceful coves.
At the same time, the charming bars and seaside spots bring life to the evenings without ever taking away from the island’s authentic character.
How do you experience everyday life in Agistri?
I love fishing. For me, it is much more than just a hobby; it is a way to relax, clear my mind, and connect with the sea and the natural beauty of the island. Life in Agistri has a sense of peace and authenticity that is hard to find elsewhere, and fishing is my favorite way to experience and enjoy it.
Is there anything you believe could be improved?
Among all the positive things I have to say, I would like to make one observation.
The island’s Health Center deserves greater attention and support from the state. Both permanent residents and visitors deserve better healthcare services.
And let’s not rush to say, “But Aegina is nearby.” An island that continues to grow and welcome more visitors each year should feel safe and adequately supported.
If you had to describe Agistri in one phrase?
Agistri is the rising jewel of the Saronic Gulf.
It is a place that combines natural beauty, authenticity, and genuine warmth. An island that deserves to be discovered by even more people, without ever losing the qualities that make it truly special.
Perhaps the Italian woman on the beach was right after all.
A Few Words About We Love Agistri
Through fishing in Skala, I had the chance to meet Elina from We Love Agistri. Together with her team, she is doing an outstanding job of showcasing the island and introducing its beauty to a wider audience.
To me, We Love Agistri is the voice of the island. With authenticity, passion, and genuine love for the place, it highlights the people, landscapes, and stories that make Agistri so special, keeping its spirit alive in the hearts of everyone who loves it.
Mr George’s perspective reminds us of something very important: the true value of Agistri is not found only in its crystal-clear waters, pine forests, or breathtaking sunsets. It is found in its people, in life’s simple moments, and in the sense of peace and belonging it offers to those who visit.
At We Love Agistri, we feel truly honored whenever visitors form such a deep connection with our island and choose to share their stories. Because, in the end, Agistri is not simply a beautiful destination—it is a place with a unique ability to draw you back, again and again.
